Designing Web Usability : The Practice of Simplicity by Jakob Nielsen

This is a must read for anyone beginning web design. It does a very good job of pointing out example of good and bad design.

Homepage Usability: 50 Websites Deconstructed by Jakob Nielsen

This is a companion to Designing Web Usability. It applies those principals to 50 homepages.

The Elements of User Experience: User-Centered Design for the Web by Jesse James Garrett

This is an excellent book about user-centered design. It goes beyond many usability books but also stressing usability in the design of the information architecture.

 

Designing Wesbsite Interface Elements: For Graphic Designers by Eric Eaton

This is an excellent introduction to the primary elements of web interface design. It shows how and when to use them with extensive graphics.

The Design of Sites: Patterns for Creating Winning Web Sites (2nd Edition) by Douglas K. van Duyne, James A. Landay, Jason I. Hong

This is an excellent reference for principle, patterns,methodologies and best practices for web design. This is update, covering topics such as AJAX. It is a must for any web designers book shelf.

Beginning JavaScript with DOM Scripting and Ajax: From Novice to Professional (Beginning: from Novice to Professional) by Christian Heilmann

This is an excellent book that takes you from beginning javascript concepts to advance javascript applications. It also provides a good introduction to Ajax. All the code examples are available online to download. A must for any experienced web designer's library.
